So I posted an add asking for an Ovation Magnum, some guys said he had , a strange bass with an Ovation neck and a different kind of body. I''ll post the pics and his reply, and I'd just like to know if anyone has any idea what this thing is and what it might be worth.

looking. Im a guitarist and not a bassist, so I picked it up to get
the guitar that I got with it cheaper. Then I noticed the neck shape
and the ovation tuners, and its a super rare neck. Its a fretless
Magnum neck, and they were only available special order through
ovation. It looks like someone put it on this body, might be a
japanese import or some sort of prototype, but it really looks like
they weren't originally together. I dont know a whole lot about
basses, but the neck feels smooth.

First of all, the bridge location is way, way off, rendering the instrument unplayable on standard tuning/with others. Or his photography skills and equipment leaves a lot to be desired .
Secondly, if the neck is modified in any way, the rarity means a squat.
I'd probably go and see it if the price was reasonable, $150 or so, but then again I'm a sucker for odd instruments and parts.

It looks like a homemade body, maybe made to make it easier to sell the neck, but I'd prefer the neck alone - given that it is a real Ovation. The logo is gone, and the shape of the headstock isn't right, although it could have been reshaped into how it looks now.

If I got to play it first, and if it really felt and sounded great in spite of everything, I'd pay maybe as much as $75. If the feel and sound was just "OK", I'd offer him $10. Without a chance to play it first, I'd ask the guy how much he was willing to pay me to take it off his hands. |
