Weird ringing sound on the A string?

So basically, I get a really weird ringing sound when I pluck the A string open or on the first few frets. It's most prominent on the open string. What could be causing this? The 5th fret on the E string doesn't have that ringy quality. It is audible through the amp, but not too much, enough to be annoying, for certain. It is much louder acoustically, which leads me to believe it's not the string itself ringing but probably the bridge, control cavity or tuners.

Could the A-string nut slot be a little too spacious?

It was the first thing I thought would be an issue - I fixated it with my left hand, it's still ringing. Just checked some info on this - could it be that the string is faulty?

Try holding A string down between nut and tuner, then play open A. If ringing goes away, then string needs to be wound down lower on the tuner, or perhaps string is rattling in the nut. If that does not work, then play fretted notes that make ringing noise, and mute string between nut and fretted note. If ringing goes away, then the nut slot is too deep and needs to be raised. This is all assuming that neck relief is adjusted properly.

You could have cut the string too short and then when you wound it it didn't go far enough down the post to have it against the nut so the string is buzzing/ jumping in the slot. Just an idea i'm no expert just i've had it happen before in the past, this video explains what i mean: (from 3:36 if the link doesn't work properly) http://youtu.be/G5zUc6S4QV8?t=3m36s

I've had this very problem, especially with flatwounds, when the string got twisted during installation. You might want to try and re-install the string being certain to twist the tuner to wind the string onto the post rather than just wrapping it around.

Fender bass? If so, as unclebass posted, increase the number or wraps on the A string tuning post and push them down to increase the break angle between the nut and the tuning post. An extremely common problem that is easily fixed.

Hey guys, good-ish news here! Apparently the A string was too 'eaten' by the bridge saddle resulting in weird ringing harmonics, I just put an old A string from the previous set and it was fine. I guess I will have to file the saddle a bit (or get a new bridge) and get a new set, it's all good, thanks everyone for replies

I've had something similar. I just changed strings and it never came back.
