What the ???

Guy wants to sell me this Mexican Fender Jazz. It's has a Fender Special Edition stamp on the back of the head stock and this (see picture). Anyone have any idea what these extra knobs are for? Did Fender do this or has this been modded? Thanks for any help/insight. Click image for larger version

Clear finish on body and rosewood fretboard?

I have one. No extra knobs on mine.

A mod. Doesn't look like a very well thought out mod, either.

But how'd he do it? There's no rear access cavity, only the pg access and those pots are in the body...

Have you removed the pickguard? He must have routed the body and then ran the wiring through the cavity containing the factory pots.

I think I would pass on it too.
Unfortunate. Nice bass, I like mine.

Did you notice a plate on the back? That would be an awful lot of cutting in from
the control cavity otherwise. You would need clearance not only for the control,
but also extra clearance to maneuver the control with it's shaft into position.
Probably not a pretty site inside.

Fender would have used stack pots. That's a mod.

The bass was abducted by aliens and implanted with high-tech bass gadgets that cannot be comprehended by humans.

Meh. You could do it from the front pretty easy. Go in from the side of the front cavity and from the top for the knobs. But yep it looks strange. It would have cost less to just get stacked knobs.

That is likely a Fender Special Edition MIM Standard put out by Fender for GC/MF retail ... probably about 2005-current production year, as the earlier ones had a white p/g stock ... depends totally on price and what else somebody decided to do to it in the name of 'progress' ... have you had the chance to get it in hand and look it over/play with it? or is it long distance type deal? ... you have any more pics so we can see any other 'innovations' ?? .. or at least a serial #?

Is one of those extra knobs for turning up the AWESOME? Because that's a rare mod, and can get you into the big time.
