Mike Mills, of REM.

He's not a flashy technical player, but a great musician with tasty bass lines.

Played a Rick 4001 (on the early recordings) then moved to a Pbass for the more popular later stuff.

A 95 P Lyte with EMG's, a modded 76 Precision, a Danelectro Longhorn, and a Realistic violin bass from the 60's. Oh, and an Upton Hawkes upright.

I've always been a huge Gene Simmons fan, not so much because he's a technical wizard (though he's far better than most would give him credit for), but for the feel he can lend to a song. As someone once remarked here on TB, "Nobody does a bass slide like Gene!" (Sorry, can't remember who you were!) And I was always a fan of his Spector customs and his Pedulla MVPs.

I worship Geddy, and we all know what he plays/has played. Funny thing is, I'm a pick player. Go figure.

Hate to sound unoriginal, But I'll name Duck and his Fender Ps.

Being a metalhead, Cliff Burton was a bit of an eye-opener to me as a youngster struggling to learn on my Squier II P copy (what a terrible bass...luckily a lot of other Squiers are very nice bargains).

Sir Paul with his famed Hofner. Funny thing is, for as many times as I think I'd like to have one (and have tried to play) I cannot come to grips with those basses. Not knocking them, but they just don't agree with me especially once I start venturing around the 10th fret on up.

But he sure sounds good on one!!

I don't at all like the "Beatle" basses.

Favourite bassist? Me of course!

And I play a carved Romanian double bass and a cheapo defretted ashton.

Though second best is a hard choice. JJ Stilwell is probably close (a local bassist who is absolutely fantastic)?Oscar pettiford? Milt Hinton? Ron carter? I don't know, I don't know what basses they play either!

He still plays the Ric. He goes back and forth but the JBass gets more use.

I've got a lot of favs; many mentioned here. However, no one has mentioned Mike Gordon from Phish. Plays a Modulus Q5. I've been into him since 93 and have never seen him play anything else.

Indeed. David J is definitely one of my faves. Caught L&R live in 90-something in Seattle and parked my arse right in front of David J cuz he's such a class act.

Sting - Fender Fretless P and '54-style P/Paul McCartney - Yamaha BB1200 (IMO his best tone)

Willie Dixon..played on so many great Chess Records recordings. Wrote so many great Blues classics. And he can really slap the double bass. One of the most under rated musicians/bass players IMO

a lot of them have switched around. Tony Levin for example: he did some awesome session work on a P bass before switching to the stingray. really unique sounding stuff. and Entwistle of course, seems like he switched every couple years.

i'd say that my list of favorites are overwhelmingly P bass guys, whether they stuck with it throughout their careers or just played it on some key recordings at some point.

Charles Mingus. He doesn't play much of anything these days, unfortunately.
