What bass next??? Hey guys! I've read these forums for a while but only just joined, so hey. How are y'all doing. I'm looking for a new bass. I currently play a 5 string J&D Brothers bass, which I love, but I'm looking for something with more of a reggae tone. Obviously a jazz has a great reputation for achieving the kinda tone I'm after but a Fender (at least a good one anyway) is out of my price range. I'm looking around the £400 mark, about $600. I'm not opposed to buying used at all or anything like that. I've heard Tokai's are worth looking in to. Any advice would be appreciated! |
How about the Squier Classic Vibe Jazz? It's the best bass you can buy in $600! |
Squiers are nice, but if you find a Tokai there's no point of comparison. Go Tokai. |

Reggae tones? Try a Hofner Contemporary Bass. Violin shape or Club style. They are both 5 lb. thumpy groove machines! Short scale design with flatwound strings translates into hypnotic boom for the masses! Yah Mon! Shake their booty! |
Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys! The Hofner club bass is a beautiful looking guitar - I'll add that to the list of things to look out for. |
Has anyone ever tried the fender modern player jazz? That looks like it could be a promising option within my price range but as it's a cheap fender made in China I'd be a bit worried about build quality etc... |
Any Fender Jazz from Japan in the 80's or 90's would be great. I have an '86 MIJ Squier Jazz. Absolutely brilliant player and sounding bass. Cost $250 in California. Although you should be playing reggae with the palm muting technique and any bass will sound reggae with this technique! Basically you rest you RH palm across the strings and pluck string with your thumb. : ) Davo |
I was using a P/J Ibanez when I used to play reggae. You can use any bass. |
