What bass should I get?

Currently I own a Squier Jazz bass and a Ibanez Gio. I started out with the Gio several years ago (It's a cheap 75$ pawn shop guitar, all it has is just a volume knob) until I upgraded to the Squier a year ago. I play a lot of progressive rock music like Yes and Rush also rock music like Led Zeppelin. I'm looking to get a good Ibanez in the sub 400$ range or anything that sounds like a Rickenbacker that's not 2000$.

i like jazz basses myself . . . played ibanez for about 8 or 9 years. just find whatever ibanez you like and look for something used in good condition. i wouldn't buy from ebay.

Try an I ibanez ATK. Tons of tone and it's versatile as hell. I use one myself and I love it. Great solid bass. And the 300 series's can be found around 3 to $400 used I believe. That's my .2

Try to find a used Ibanez SR500 series bass. Great for the cash, and you should be able to find one used for $350-400. As said before by gregmon79, the ATK series is also highly versatile, if you would choose that over the SR.

I've owned a couple 4001's. Nothing else sounds like them. You're probably best off to get a bass with a maple body.

+1 on the SR500 series. I had one years ago and it was very nice. Talkbass mangs always say great things about them.

I once heard somewhere (probably on this forum) that Jazz Basses can sound like Rickenbackers. Is this true anyone?

Maybe if you start with a Flat EQ and start raising the upper mid and highs with some rotosounds.

Ibanez is really hard to beat for the money. In my experience (I generally dont play them, but I have), they are very playable, a nice fast neck and you can get a variety of useful tones out of them.

But ultimately, the answer is get the one that you like and feels good and plays well. That means you have to play it before you commit to it.
