What was the best non-Fender J you ever played?

Some companies do Fender better than Fender. The best one I played was a Joe Osborne sig Lakland.

Had a really old aria pro jazz copy with block inlays that sounded gorgeous, miss that bad boy, was my second bass after my squier p bass. It served me well and sounded more like a jazz bass than any other I've owned since, neck was rock solid and comfy as well.

An Alleva Coppolo 5-string J. I usually don't like 5's, but this one was superb and weighed considerably less than most. Cannot bring myself to spend that kind of money on a bass, but if I could, it would be at the top of my short list.

Sadowsky, Sandberg and Lakland are all better than Fender

I say Sadowsky (both Standard NYC and Metro UV70 5ers)

But I quote this one, 'cause the sensation I back then felt for Sadowskies was exactly this one.

Quotin' again up until the end of sentence I'd tell that, havin' in the past the opportunity of a 5er boutique made for me (that I eventually let down) if I'd ever spend that kind of money, I certainly wouldn't go for Sadowsky, but for Custom USA G&L L2500 from American Guitar and Band (definitely no Jazz bass anyway)

Cheers,
Wallace

Everyone here has such high end basses, I'm a little embarrassed about mine!!

Not really. Here's the thing. I don't have much experience with Jazz basses. I've had two in my 32 years as a bassist. One was a MIM that fell apart on stage on me back in the mid-90's. that turned me off on Fenders for quite a few years.

The best I've personally ever owned is my SX Ursa 2, but you have to understand that I've put a TON of work into making it play the way it does.

Yeah I had a USA Jazz fall apart on me during a summer of gigs in the mid '90s. I think they just made a lot of terrible basses around that time. I think mine was a '93 or '94. By the end of '95 it was firewood.

How on earth did the Jazz fall apart on you?

Bridge saddles decided to loosen themselves while I was playing. By the end of the set I was picking up whatever pieces of the bridge that I could find. I returned the bass the next day.

That was back before I knew anything about my gear. Now, that bridge would have been swapped before it made it to the stage.

Funny, that was the LAST time I gigged without a backup.

I own a '73 Jazz, a fretted 70's Squier VM and a Squier Fretless VM. Last month I bought a Masada Jazz copy off Craigslist for $150. It's amazing. Currently my #1 electric. Sounds GREAT.

I just can't imagine a Fender falling apart like that. Things must have really been bad for the company then.

Oh yes: they were much like that (and worse) back then

Can you trust me when I say that mid '90s Fenders kept us all nervously laughin' where have all past glories gone?

Cheers,
Wallace
