That happened to me once and I had to spend time with the wife...now, I have 10 basses and we are much happier.

I'm the last one to argue in favor of more gearslutting, but I think having one of those cheap-but-great used basses we know about as a backup for when the main is in the shop is a good thing. Aborting practicing because of a repair sounds really bad to me (not having enough time to practice bass or not).

Yeah, I was feeling weird from not playing because I play everyday, so I found this beatup Peavey Foundation and I gotta say, that thing is pretty sweet, I might just like it more than my Ibby I think..

I would just go get the bass back from the tech and tell them 2-3'weeks is just way too long to wait for a setup (that may or may not be to your liking) There are tons of resources on the web that can teach you how to do it. It's not hard and can be fun. These are the reasons I feel it's always better to have 2 basses, even if one is just a $90 beater.

I just got a second, so I think I'll just leave the other in the shop because if I would have to pay anything, I wouldn't be able to.

I first take my electric (or acoustic/electric) guitar and crank the lows and use the neck pickup with the tone at 2 or 3. Then I palm mute and play with my thumb for a few minutes. Then i put my guitar down.
Then i go on talkbass for what seems like an eternity. ::hide::

Sell a kidney on the black market, and get one of every instrument to play.

Okay, I'm bumping this up just to say that it has been 24 days since I dropped of my bass, which is over his two to three week estimation. I gotta say, I'm getting a bit frustrated with this shop. I think I may change what shop I go to, so to East Valley Arizonans: if you don't do your own work on your basses, where do you take them?

Yeah, I’d just play one of my other basses.

I do my own setups, but if I was having it done, I’d take it to someone who would do it the same day or at least the next day.

PS: while you’re waiting, maybe work on your sight reading skills.

+1000 to getting a cheap back up bass!

Or rent one for the time being. That's cheap.

Yah , This should be a great incentive for you to learn to do your own set-up. 15 minutes... 20 tops.
+1

There's loads of resources on the web for setting up a bass. Don't be afraid of experimenting, there isn't much were you can really break your bass.

How many music stores are in your area? Can you call them and ask if they have a recommendation or in-house?
In my area, there have been several local techs that advertise on craigslist.

Of all places, the closest Guitar Center once gave me a freebie setup voucher. Now, I always do my own, but I thought this one time heck why not. They have an outside guy that comes in and works in their 'repair shop' a few days a week, and he did a fantastic job on my bass. So my guitarist has been taking his axes to him and is happy.

A setup doesn't take more than an hour and a half to do on a bass that doesn't have uneven/worn frets.
