Another difference that I haven't seen brought up in this thread (well, maybe I missed it) is that with a larger budget for a bass, you can get more options. If you have 300 bucks to spend on a bass, there are a handful of basses that you can afford, with limited options (wood, pickups and configuration, finish, etc.) ... whereas if you have 3,000 - you can get pretty much whatever you want.

If brand is not a factor, coffee table top is not a factor and the player is able to do his/her own mods, the main thing is the neck.

Pickups and hardware are easy to swap and bodies don't make that much difference in sound of a solid body electric (though some would set me on fire for saying such a blasphemy).
