I asume one has to care for a painted guitar differently than a natural finish. But .. how?

I've used Alembic Supreme Polish for years now. Seems to work very well.

I use my own special blend of blood, sweat and tequila.

No, but in all seriousness, on the rare occasions that I do actually clean my bass, I use a Fender/Meguiar's. Use the swirl & haze stuff first, and then the finish polish, putting it on the sponge to rub in, and then using an old cotton shirt to wipre it off.

I'll try.

I use Dunlop 65 on painted and poly finishes, some car wax works. I wouldn't use car wax on a Peavey Grind I once owned, because the wood, although smooth, had pores and grain that would've grabbed the wax and it would've stayed there. There was a thread not too long ago about a Fender Select J Bass that came brand new with what was believed to be polishing compound in the grain of the fretboard. A nice, dark fretboard with white specks all over it.

I use Howard's Feed and Wax on the neck and fretboard of my FBB, but the builder warned me to not get it on the poly body finish because it could cause damage. He even suggested I tape it off.

Some stuff is harmful to some finishes, and some stuff probably just doesn't work.

Just guessing.

Windex. Yes. Windex.

It gets the grime off and cleans. Which is all it's supposed to do.

I want to clean my basses, not wax them!

I use lemon oil for my rosewood fretboards, and Turtle wax ICE for all Painted surfaces. I use lemon oil for the oil finishes like on my Tobias Growler. For my sunburst's and instruments with stained finishes instead of paint I use Old English Polish.and I only use microfiber cloths to put on or take off.

When you say gunk, you mean the gunk on the maple fingerboard of a Stingray? If so, I'll have a go at it.

I’m Greek, but I never heard of the windex-for-everything growing up. In any case I use… windex.

And sometime those Clorox wipes (don’t contain bleach) cause I tend to have them around.

Maybe I should use one of these on the Ibanez SR505?

For reals. You would clean a natural finish piece of mahogany with dishwashing liquid.

If my basses get dirty enough to gross me out (last time it was blood all over the front from a split finger) I use water on a paper towel.

If I need to shine one up for a classy show, I use some Dunlop 65 polish with a clean rag.

Depends on how dirty it is.

Usually Dr. Duck's Axe Wax as an all around cleaner.

Fretboard wipes if it's been a while for the fretboard.

Gorgomyte for the holy crap what happened to that fretboard gunk.

Steel wool for those fairly oxidized metal pieces.

Edit: Also, Meguires Cleaner Wax for after cleaning the metal pieces.
