What does this do

I was watching a Gary Willis video on setting up an Ibanez GWB1005. It has what he called a ramp or what looks like a block of wood between the pick up and the end of the fret board. What is this for? Tom

It's not a separate block of wood, it's part of the neck.
Makes the neck heel longer than the fretboard, so there's more wood/wood contact and room to put screws.
When the neck screws are farther apart, there is a more stable connection.
On designs where you have the fretboard fairly well clear of the body for easy upper-fret access, this is a very good thing.

I thought ramps were to decrease your attack, like so your fingers wouldn't dive to far beyond the string and slow your fingering.

He was kidding.

Ramps are there so that your fingers will always "dig in" the same amount when you play. It keeps things consistent.
