What is the essence of P ?

Was curious, what are the necessary and sufficient
conditions of calling something a P bass? I figure its
at least the pickups, right? But are the other required
elements/characteristics?

One split-coil, typically passive pickup, typically wired volume/tone.

This question is like asking what is the essence of the Ford F-Series. Sure, they're all somewhat similar, in that they have engines, transmissions, brakes, etc, but there are VAST differences to be found.

No requirements other then that the bass uses only P pups. Wether its single P pup set or P pups bridge and neck position sets.
