Mine is 9 lbs. Weighed it today. It's a 2001 MIM with an anodized pickguard and a Gotoh 201 bridge. Everything else is stock.
I have a fretless that is 8.5 lbs, identical except for a Hipshot vintage bridge.
Neck included.

I've owned over 30 P-basses.
For me, 7.5 lbs, to 8.5 lbs, are what I look for.
This weight is best for the warm, round tone, I look for in a P-bass.
I've had P-basses a heavy as 14.5 lbs.
Big, tone, with big sustain. (these basses had heavy finish on body)
Each bass is different.
If you find one you like, check weight, neck profile, wood.
They all tell a story. |

I have to P-bass, one is a Lakland Skyline Bob Glaud with a hipshot Detuner, the other is a Warmoth 72 P bass body, with a Fender MIJ 57 Reissue neck with vintage style tuners, both are 7.9 lbs. |

| | | | It has to do with TONE. Light=resonant=tone. Shoulder comfort is secondary. Heavy may sustain and have attack, but the tone is one dimensional. To me it is uninspiring.
Light: Dimension, singing, air, midrange complexity, extended lows.
Same with guitars, electric and acoustic.
Overbuilt is dead.
Look for light.
My basses weigh well under 8 pounds. |
