What to expect when buying an SX?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,
I'm currently hoping to buy an SX bass in the classifieds that sounds it shouldn't need any work. If the deal doesn't work out, then I will buy a new SX from Rondo. What should I expect to need done to a new bass? And I'm talking need, the wants I'll have plenty of on my own, but build wise, what will it need?

The only thing I felt it really needed was a new set of strings. I slapped a set of chromes and that was it. A good setup is a good idea too but that's true of any bass.

I eventually did add a few things to it... like some ashtrays and swapped out the black p/g with a green pearloid. It sounds better now!

You may not necessarily need to do anything to it at all. Some of them come out to be great as is. Most, however, need a fret leveling/dressing, and a good setup, some require more but it's all personal preference.

Second on the strings, and I would consider the setup a must as well. I would say the same for any bass that is shipped from another climate zone. My opinion of course and since I do my own setup on all my basses myself anyway... well maybe I am overly particular.

i've read some neck joints have issues. Is that a common problem or just a hit and miss?

I would say hit and miss. I have two SX basses and the neck pocket was fine on both.
