So I am getting married in October After the wedding I am going to buy a wedding present for myself and I narrowed it down to a G&L product: the new Jazz or a 2500. You can never go wrong with good Jazz Bass but I do have a Geddy Lee that I love. I never played a 2500 but from what I have read, they are amazing basses.
Help me decide. I am in love with the copper finish they offer so at least I know the color I want |

If you already have a great Jazz, the 2500 will expand your tonal options, and might be a better bet.
But I'm not in the best position to give this advice, because I have a fantastic Jazz, and yet ordered a JB two weeks ago! The combination of a traditional J with a G&L #8 neck was just too much to resist. I've had the GAS since I learned about the JB, and I couldn't take it anymore.
If you don't have any type of P-bass, look into an SB-1 or SB-2. That MFD split-coil simply rules.
If I ever become more of a five string player, I'll probably get an L-2500. They are extremely cool basses, and a recent Tribute model I tried felt almost as good as the USA version.

The JB is just in another class over the Geddy and will satisfy your Jazz Bass need. The 2500 is just killer overall and will satisfy your need for everything else. |

And if you are selling to buy, why not get a Sadowsky and be done. |

String spacing is really farking tight on that one. I couldn't stand the ergonomics even though it was clearly a well made instrument with a nice array of tones.

The L2500 is a totally different animal PLUS its a 5er.
I have a Warmoth frankenbass with L-2500 guts and the range of usable tones is just stunning!
But like Kael said- make sure you try one first to make sure the ergonomics work for you.
Oh yeah- and congrats on the wedding too!!

I only hope that the 2500 doesnt have the problem with the G string slippin off the neck like the MM5's have |

And I've never had any problem with the G on my L-2500. |

I have an L-2500 and a Geddy Lee. The only time I can see myself using a Jazz is if I'm playing some gig where there is some specific reason for a Jazz - in which case, I reckon if it NEEDS to be a Jazz, then it is probably going to need to be a Fender. My Geddy is there to satisfy that (and because I like the neck and the looks).
The 2500 is very comfortable (to me, anyway). Except for the weight. It does get heavy. It weighs 10.5# now. The current neck is a jazz profile with maple board and color-matched headstock. The original neck (a '98 - the truss rod broke) was the same profile, but rosewood fretboard and plain headstock. On the same scale, it was 11.25#. Like I said, though, even at it's current 10.5#, it gets heavy...
If you order one, be sure and ask for the Single Coil option. They don't advertise it as an option, but I'm pretty sure you can get it if you ask. They added it to mine when I got my new neck, and there was one for sale in the Classifieds here recently that was ordered with it originally from the factory. With the Single Coil option, instead of the middle switch having 2 positions (Series w/bass boost or Parallel), it will have 3 (Series w/bass boost or Parallel or Single Coil). The only downside is it might add a very few bucks to the cost. No downside sound- or playing-wise.

Thanks for all the advice guys. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
