What is a good 5 string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a Traben Chaos 5 (with the flame bridge). It is a bit heavy and I am kind of over the bridge. It sounds pretty good, but I want a better one that appeals to me more. So I was thinking of selling it, and buying a used 5 string. I was looking at the SR505-705 (really want some Barts), and a Peavey Cirrus BXP. Are there any that people would recommend a look at? Budget would be about 350-500, so mostly looking used.

EDIT: Also looking at a Warwick Rockbass Corvette and Schecter Stilletto series.

Upper end ESP Ltd B & F series would also be well worth checking out to imo. Of those on your list Id prob go with Schecter. I think they do better low B then the Ibanez SR's, except for their upper upper end SR's.

The low end MTD basses are fantastic for the money, I believe the five string brand new goes for $550

I have a old B-254 with the EMG HZs, and the bass is kind of weak, I don't know why. The preamp burntout, and so I got an emg preamp, and it sounds a lot better, but not as good as it feels it should, although the quality looks impressive. But I wouldn't get another ESP unless its a surveyor. (I have a Viper 254 and EC 254, so I am kind of done with ESPs).

I was looking at the Schecter Studio 5 in particular from Schecter. But I have heard great things about cirrus's, and the bxps have the same pu's.

I prefer Ibanez, the neck is the fastest I have tried on a 5

Sounds like you have your mind almost made up. I have a Fender P Bass V, it is heavy and has a wide neck however it is a blast to play and it sounds great without any pre-amp or special effects. As far as Schecters go I have a 6 and a 4 and would look at their 5's if I didn't already have a five stringer..................Good luck .......

+1 on that. I just picked one up a few weeks ago and love it. Very punchy!

Definitely definitely definitely get the ibanez sr505. If you can spend a little more get the sr605. It's a very sexy bass.

Seriously, I would get this MTD Kingston Heir in the classifieds. The necks on the MTD's are awesome and it's not that heavy. Plus you get a variety of tones with the J/MM configuration, a la Lakland 55-02. Not to mention, you could always upgrade the pickups later on down the road. I owned one of these and I would love to get another. If I had the $500 laying around, I'd snatch it up.
