Pretty tough to beat the SX instruments from Rondo Music for the bucks....they are surprisingly good playing and sounding basses. Ibanez SR's are pretty good too if you like skinny necks, you might find a used one for $200.00 or so....

Stagg makes a very cool fretless, BC300. Should be some sound samples on YouTube. I think I paid well under $250 for mine. Wish I would have kept it....

There a lot of fretless Yamaha basses with P pickups that often go for around $200. Fretless Peavey Foundations and T-20s also can be had for very little.

Rondo's inventory changes quickly. If you see something there you like, don't procrastinate.

I've bought 2 nice MIM Fender fretless jazz basses with mods I approve of for under 500. Don't be in a hurry and you'll find some great deals.

I have a Yamaha RBX that I can't really complain about... nice entry-level fretless.

I had bought my Cort B4FL for $300 new. It has a similar feel to an Ibanez SR series bass. It has Bartolini MK1 pup's and EQ with an EQ on/off switch. Not a bad bass at all.
