what kind of bass is this?

I picked up this Fender bass up today. They said they think it's a Prodigy bass. But the description of a Prodigy bass that I read on the Fender web site says Prodigy basses has a Jazz pickup and a Precision pickup. Clearly, this bass has two jazz pickups. Also, the Prodigy Bases said "Prodigy" on the head stock, but clearly this says "Jazz". Did Fender make a Prodigy jazz bass like this? Or maybe the body isn't Fender at all but has a Fender Jazz neck? Not sure. At any rate it sounds great despite the dings and dents. Neck is straight, no crackling from the pots, minor fret wear. I'm happy with it but wanted to learn more about it.

Its a fender USA Jazz from late 80's/early 90's...they had a modern name but I forget.

Looks like it might be a Fender Jazz Plus.

Fender jazz bass plus

mellowgerman 01-26-2013 08:12 PM

At first glance it does look like a Jazz Bass Plus. However, the Jazz Bass Plus had Lace Sensor pickups (no exposed pole pieces) and an active preamp with stacked concentric pots. Also, they said "Jazz Bass Plus" right on the headstock.
Unless there was a variant batch I am not aware of, this is not a Jazz Bass Plus. Perhaps something that came about from leftover bodies from the Plus series?

How many frets does it have?

I really know very little about Fender. I thought US models had the truss access at the heel?

I'd say it is a jazz plus that has (sadly) had the Kubicki pre and lace pickups removed. I'm not so sure they said plus on the headstock. Compare to this:

Hi Everyone, thank you for the replies.

They told me the original electronics were not working when they got it, so they installed 2 new Duncan antiquities pickups and new pots. This bass has 22 frets.

@wvbass, Thanks for that link. That bass is practically identical to mine.

based on these responses I'm thinking mine is definitely a Jazz bass plus.

Here's a full sized picture for anyone interested. I'll try to take a better one later.

Nice looking bass, I always thought the "plus" fenders from the late 80/early 90's were good looking basses.

Thundar 01-26-2013 10:26 PM

I guess "plus" was the modern name I couldnt think of....lol

mellowgerman 01-27-2013 10:52 AM

Hmm well must be a plus then. All I know is that the Fender Jazz Bass Plus I used to own, said "Jazz Bass Plus" on the headstock
