"Steel Adjustable Neck" usually indicates a Matsumoku product. Could have been badged as an Aria, but equally likely to have been branded otherwise.

Give it a punt on the Matsumoku forum, and/or drop into this megathread over on Basschat.co.uk. There's a few experts out there, so you might be able to whittle it down to one or two brands.

Pete.

That scroll headstock is beautiful and unusual!

The bass was made in the Matsumoku factory in Japan - the tailpiece, neck plate and other visible cues tell me that. It could be a Univox, Aria, Lyle, Epiphone or any of the other brands made by that factory. Most of the Matsu basses are pretty well made, although the pickups generally aren't the very best. With a good setup it should play well. The brand really isn't that material with the Matsu basses.

I'm a fan of the Matsumoku basses and think you have a nice bass - but fer cryin' out loud, clean it up!!!

I vote Univox as well, but they were often rebranded and thrown around as different companies.

eh, then again, maybe not...robbie shakespeare once did an interview where he talked about using family man's old hofner and loving it but he never cleaned it. one day he got a wild hair and cleaned it, and he said it was never the same and lost the tonality he liked and he quit using it.

I was gonna say EKO with early Hi-Flyer pickups. But Univox it is ...probably sounds amazing

Haven't heard it yet, it doesn't make a sound when plugged in. But I'm an electronics tech, so I really don't think I'll have any problem getting it to work. It currently belongs to a friend of mine, and I am considering making him an offer for it.
