Give it a punt on the Matsumoku forum, and/or drop into this megathread over on Basschat.co.uk. There's a few experts out there, so you might be able to whittle it down to one or two brands.
Pete.

The bass was made in the Matsumoku factory in Japan - the tailpiece, neck plate and other visible cues tell me that. It could be a Univox, Aria, Lyle, Epiphone or any of the other brands made by that factory. Most of the Matsu basses are pretty well made, although the pickups generally aren't the very best. With a good setup it should play well. The brand really isn't that material with the Matsu basses.
I'm a fan of the Matsumoku basses and think you have a nice bass - but fer cryin' out loud, clean it up!!!

| | | | Haven't heard it yet, it doesn't make a sound when plugged in. But I'm an electronics tech, so I really don't think I'll have any problem getting it to work. It currently belongs to a friend of mine, and I am considering making him an offer for it.
