What kind of bass should i choose? (Fender,Epiphone,Sterling)

I decided that I would like to buy a second bass, something a little better than my Ibanez EDB400 (which i love btw)

The problem is the closest guitar center is over an hour and 30 minutes away and I cannot really travel that far just to try out a few basses and one of the two local guitar stores is focused on ltd basses and the other is crazy over priced (400 dollars for a basic squire jazz, used)

The basses I would like are:

51' fender precision bass reissue (it looks pretty sick)
or should I go with just a MIM P bass?

Epiphone Jack Casady Bass

Sterling by Musicman Ray34

Which one do you think will be best suited for a classic rock band? I am leaning torward the 51' reissue but i would like to hear others opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Classic rock? Ray 34 with flats.

I suspect most responses will favor the P-Bass, and that would be an excellent choice for a classic rock band. The MIM would be a bit more versatile than the '51. I play Fenders too, but really like my Stingray for most everything we do. I have Stage II flats on it, dial off the upper end a tad, and thump away. I have played the new Sterlings, and honestly cannot find any qualitative difference from my US Ray. That might be your best investment IMHO.

Yeah, the 51P would probably suit your needs the most. However, the Jack Casady is one of the awesomest basses to play. It looks good, feels good, sounds good, has an awesome vibe... The tone is just probably not what you're looking for.

That's a big price jump from a 51P reissue to a MIM P! For the record, I have a MIM P and love it. I did change out the stock pickup for a Fralin.

The '51P is a nice bass, I just don't like the hum that comes along with a single coil pickup. I'd suggest considering a RW P if a maple neck is a requirement. If not, I'd also look at a HW 1. All about the same price. For a couple hundred more you could snag a new MIA P bass. If you check the classifieds you can probably get a used MIA P in great condition for about $900.00.

For classic rock, I'd go with a P.

No experience with the Jack Casady. In general I don't like the feel of Epiphone necks.

The SBMM Ray 34 is a great bass, but it is not a P. The Ray is going to have a more modern sound. The on-board eq gives you good control over your tone, so, you should be able to dial-up a good classic rock tone, but again, it will not be a P. I've got a SBBM SB14 and a P, they are different.

As many will probably tell you, it is a good investment of your hour and 30 minutes to go and play them. Also, you will notice differences between different basses in the same model, so, finding the right one is to your advantage.

Good luck and enjoy!!!

I'd go with the P or the Sterling.
