No. That's not the Fender tone. But this is a classic troll post.

They keep the mojo in a secret place. If you found out how to get it, they would kill you.

Low output has nothing to do with tone. That's what volume knobs are made for.

Tone - at least to me - is the coloration of the sound based on all of the components (especially the pickups). Listen to quite a bit of recorded history that has been recorded with either a Precision or Jazz. THAT is the Fender sound. Some love it. Others don't. Engineers love it because they can dial it in quickly.

Other builders, such as Sadowsky and Lakland, have refined that Fender style (body wise) and sound, but yet it's not so far out there it wouldn't just drop in place of a Fender product.

I have a P5 as my main bass, and yeah, it's pretty mellow on the output side. The pickup in the '08s is probably a lot more modern and smooth than the traditional P tone. I changed the pup to a Nordstrand, which gave it a big thumpy tone and hot output. I changed it back to the Fender though, because it sounded so smooth and crisp.

Pickup configuration (the P pickup is really kind of an odd design if you think about it), and then pickup placement. After that, construction methods and materials (bolt-on design, woods used, bridge, etc.)

So you so don't think the P5 sounds like a traditional P?
How is it different? You didn't dig the Nordy?
(I have a Yamaha Attitude with Dimarzio double rail P pickups that I really like. Fairly high output and really thumpy)

I thought the P5 was thumpy, but fairly bright?
