Due to things Ive heard from fine furniture makers as I was growing up as a kid, Ive never trusted lemon oil as good for fretboards. I think dunlops 02 deep conditioner for them a better product. I'm not familair enough with linseed to have an opinion on it.

You forgot to mention the most important thing. What wood is the fretboard made of?

I've used Yamaha Bore Oil (lightly) on my fretless; it is a light oil designed to seal the inside of woodwinds from humid player breath. No smell, won't go rancid since it is a synthetic.

I've just gotten to use some Gorgomyte™ to clean up a nasty fretted board. It removed all hand gunk, shined the frets, conditioned the wood, and got me a beer. I am very impressed with this product.

OK, everything but the beer...

What is this Walmart oil "that works better in most cases" that you speak of???

Anyway, I like Planet Waves Hydrate.

for me, lemon oil is too thin and just dissapears into the wood. boiled linseed works great, and leaves a shine even after you buff it off.

"lemon oil" is simply lemon scented mineral oil. Never, ever use any oil on a maple board.

Not even tung oil? Many basses come with tung oiled maple boards.

I've followed Sadowsky's suggestion for many years, and used Aerosol Windex (foam spray) and a tootbrush to clean the gunk off the FB and frets. I follow up with a wipe of Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil gunstock oil.

The gunstock oil was at the recommendation of Ernie Ball for maintaining my StingRay fretless. It dries pretty fast and doesn't get slimy when the humidity goes up.

I've tried a bunch of different oils over the years - lemon, linseed, etc. The type that stopped my search is a high quality woodwind bore oil. I wouldn't use anything else at this point. This of course presumes you're not talking about a hard-finished fingerboard. For the neck itself, I really like the B-C Tru-Oil and their Wax.

Hat oil? Never heard of it! Just kidding. Any way I used Murphy's oil soap to clean up a old Peavey Dyna- Unity bass that I had with the natural wood finish. Talked to a furniture/ wood craft supply store here in Grand Rapids. They Recomened that I use Tung oil and I did for the body. Not sure though if that would be ok for the fret board?
