what other really light basses are there?

Sign in to disble this ad
i got a hofner icon violin bass (weighs 5 1/2 pounds), and have a hofner contemporary club bass on the way that should weigh just over 6 pounds. these are both short scale, which is a plus since the reason i need a light bass is shoulder issues. i also tried a squier bronco, and bought it after only a few minutes play - thought i'd throw in a better pickup - but though it's light, i didn't like it enough to bother modding it, so i'm returning it.

steinbergers were suggested - any of them you'd particularly recommend?

what other light basses are there that you'd suggest? i'd say 7 pounds is my max. short scale or small body a plus, good tone a must.

Fender P Lyte. Three or four inch strap. You'll never know it's there.

With Fenders it's a total crapshoot. Two of the same exact model from the same exact year might have a huge weight difference. Hey, it's wood after all.

So if you want a Fender pick them up in store.

Perhaps you might want to speak with Cliff Bordwell: CB Basses - Fine Handcrafted Custom Basses

He participates on a regular basis here at TB.

Really Light!

The Paulownia bodied Jay Turser and even J. Reynolds, J3 (probably come from the same plant) are just amazingly light. I think it's a hole in perception with these. China has used the wood for instruments for eons for its resonance qualities. Brubaker had a bass reviewed by Bass Player years ago with a Paulownia body to glowing reviews. Guitar Mill charges a premium for a body from this wood. So, it can sound very good although the Turser instruments tend to have a weak link in the grade of maple in the neck wood. On the other hand, a used one can be had readily for around $100.00. making a neck upgrade not too bad of an overall outlay.

Ibanez sr300;s are very light as would be any others with mahogany body and no top. Same for basswood body basses with no top. faves among those would be esp ltd B series.

is there a certain pickup config./style of bass you are looking for?? if you're looking for a p/j style i have to suggest the yamaha rbx-170. very light bass, couldn't be too much heavier than 7lbs. i'll bet those ibanez's are a good alternative as well^^.

If you can find one, try an Ibanez "Bean" Bass (MC888DS). Small body, 34" scale, tone for days.

Passive electronics and neck-thru construction.

Silvertone (believe it or not)!
Mine feels like I'm playing a feather!
And for 100-200$ (can't remember how much I got it for about 10 years back) they sound AMAZING, and play great.

By now, I've ripped out the frets, and it's got some punk-rock anger smashy type damage on it, but she still plays like a dream.

I'll toss in a picture when I get my file size issue fixed. :P

my '63 RI Longscale (34") weighs about 6 lbs.

Also, Gretsch just re-release the Junior Jet.
Hot pickups, really light, shortscale, affordable.
