What P/J am I looking for????

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,

I am looking for a p/j bass that has the following features:

* passive
*9 lbs or under
* P style neck
* 300 bucks or less used

Anyone have any idea of a good bass that fits all these requirements? All I can seem to find ar P/Js with J necks or ones that are out of my price range.

Im hoping to score something like an older yamaha peavey ibanez etc, that will be a quality instrument for a good price (kinda like a peavey foundation---great bass for low cash) but I havent really found a model that meets all these requirements. I am not a big fan of squier or SX so I will be looking down other avenues. Any help is appreciated cheers--PK

Squier Jaguar Bass? They sound sweet. I'm not sure if its a P or J neck. Its probably a J.

It is a J-neck. I own one of the first ones to hit California and I love it all to pieces - but if you want a P neck, you'll have to change it yourself I think.

Late edit:: The Squier VM-Jag is 8lbs, 0 ozs.

Squire p used that weighs under 9 lbs, a cheap dremel and a used j pup with what ever you have left. There you go a bass that meets all your features, you just have to put maybe an hours work in to it

Yamaha BB414 or 424. Only downside is there is no blend knob, just a 3-way selector. On the 424 all three positions are usable, can't vouch for the 414.

Yamaha and ESP are both really good companies. The only way to really know which instrument might be better for you is to try them, but I will say that I have owned ESP instruments before and always felt they were a huge value. Lots of vibe.

Guild Pilot bass. You can find some for around that, although they also go for a little more. But its a solid bass if you can find the US made ones. Jaco had one, Garry Tallent used one for two tours, and Alec John Such used it on the first couple of JBJ tours.

Good, workman basses with great P/J sound.

Has a neck that is more P then J.

A mid-80's Ibanez Roadstar 650 would fit the bill, too. My '86 is under 8 lbs and the neck is similar to the '70's Fender Precisions.

The Pilot is a great bass, but mine definitely had a narrow neck--more J than P.
