What percent of a P bass's weight is the body?

Let me see if I can phrase this the right way. How much would a "lightweight" Precision body weigh? As opposed to a "heavy" one? I mean, if the whole bass is around 8 lbs, what might the body weight be?

I see ads for bodies with the weight listed, but I don't know how to estimate what they would end up weighing as a whole assembled bass.

The neck-to-body ratio varies widely, because e.g. some necks have extra steel reinforcing rods, and big heavy tuners, while others are made much lighter. And a P-bass might as easily have a light or heavy body, depending on the wood and the maker.

Speaking very broadly I'd say 4 lbs is my dividing line between "light" and "heavy" for a body... but again there are many other variables. A high-mass bridge can add nearly a pound to a body.

I agree. 4 -4.5 lbs. would be considered pretty light for a P bass body. You don't want the body too light or you'll end up with some massive neck dive. Putting lightweight tuners, like Hipshot Ultralites will help a lot with that though.

pickguard, pickup, pots, knobs, vintage bridge are about 1lb
neck varies but regular vintage style tuners on a vintage style maple neck will be just under 3lbs probably closer to 2.5lbs.

so if you want an 8lb bass you want a body that's 4.5lb or thereabouts
