What pickguard would go on this jazz bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
It's even got the holes drilled in, which is pretty tacky, though helpful. I'm not a big fan of relicked basses, but I like the price (just a bit above the Squier), and with a black pickguard I think I could live with it. Are there different pickguards for different years? I know nothing about pickguards, sorry. (And if you've got any other suggestions for a colour, I'm all ears.)

Site here (scroll down a bit): http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintagebass.html

Thanks!

Doubtful that you'll find a PG that lines up with the holes. You'll probably have to drill new ones. Also, the angles between the control plate and the PG are sometimes different on the knock offs. Looks like they don't even come with a PG from the factory, makes me wonder if the holes are lined up with anything.

You should by a cheap PG and experiment before buying an expensive or fancy one.

Check eBay, or here's a link -

Looks awesome as it is, dude.

But if I was forced to whack one on, It'd have to be black.

Tort or black. Like audiomitch said the holes probably won't line up on an aftermarket pickguard so you will have to drill new ones.

I'd leave it. If you must have a PG I'd go with tort!

Cheers,
Jim

Good advice, all.

Yeah, tort was the other option, but I've seen lots of pics of black on sunburst that look very nice, so it'd be that, if anything.

I didn't think about it, but you're right - it probably wouldn't line up perfectly with a j-bass pickguard. Hmm. I'll have to give it a think.

Anyway, thanks again.

That was my first thought.

But if you must put a pickguard on.... tort! I have a sunburst/rosewood Precision and the tort looks soooooo nice and classy on it.

A lot of other people said black, but with a rosewood guard I actually like white better. I have a cheap jazz fretless that's sunburst/rosewood that had a white one on it and I traded it for a black one thinking that would make it just a little prettier. I was wrong. I just traded the black one for another white one and like that better.

If it had a maple fingerboard instead of rosewood, then I'd say go with the black.

That is a Jaco bass or a good copy of the "relic pattern"
