What is the sonic advantage to having a P and J pup in a bass?

I saw STP tonight on TV and the bassist sounded great, he was using a Schecter with a J and P pup in it. Being more of a rock producer most everyone comes in with either a P or some active Warwick/Ibanez bass. So what's the deal with the Jazz pickup and how does it blend or work with the P?

I think the p gives it the low mids that are perfect for sitting in the mix but still easily heard, and the jazz in the bridge adds the highs and more growl which lets it cut even better. Adds more definition and thickness to the p.

You already said it.

Because it sounds awesome.

Rob said years ago in an interview the PJ is just "the" sound for STP, coming from a Musicman and then a JJ bass, which was the original Model T which can be seen on the "Unglued" Letterman or Leno performance.
