What would you buy?
Sold stuff, have around 300 bucks. I can certainly kick in a few dollars but probably under 400 would be best. I already have decent 4 string p and j basses. Was looking at a squier active deluxe fiver, sub ray4 or maaaaybe ray5 (although I don't care for the look of the 5 string as much) or maybe a fretless jazz. Just out of curiosity, what would YOU go for. It's pretty hit and miss what I can try out in stores am I'm in Canada so finding a used bass to have shipped here is trickier.
What would you do?
I've been looking at the Squier Vintage modified Telecaster bass special. Has some great reviews and it only costs 300.00.
Save the money.
Or use it for lessons.
What does your amp and DI/mic situation look like?
If you already have a few basses you like (or love) maybe it's time to complete the equation?
Don't be one of those guys that show up at gigs with a killer bass, but nothing else required to get the sound of it translated to the back rows.
Go for the SUB Ray4.
Best value for money.
You could blindfold me, hand me a Ray4 and tell me that it's a USA Stingray and I'd believe you.
Fretless Jazz. But I'd also say you can't have enough p-basses.
Check out your local Kijiji ads first.
There may be something good for cheap.
Just personally, I'd take the 'ray 5. Unlike some, I actually prefer the pickguard - but that's not why. If you have a good 5 in your arsenal, new things open up - and not just below the E. I find using the low string upwards of the 5th fret makes certain riffs easier to play. The 'ray is also good VFM. Good point made about having a decent amp, though.
