What is your favorite metal bass tone?
Here is some tones I REALLY like:
Nolly from Periphery:
In terms of old school, I'd gotta give it to Geezer, but Jon Leon of White Wizzard really blows me away in terms of a newer band. He has probably my favorite tone of all time.
Here's Jon in action
As a teen in the 80s, my favorite bass tone was on the album "Ignorance" by Sacred Reich.
Jason Newsted's Sadowsky tone with Metallica
Jon from White Wizard has an awesome tone (even though as a person he is a douche)
I also like the following
- 80's (and the recent attempt at recapturing the tone) of Megadeth's David Ellefson
- Greg Christian of Testament on the New Order/Souls of Black albums
- Fred Leclerc of Dragonforce
- Adrian Lambert of (formerly) Dragonforce, Biomechanical, and Son of Science
Newsted's tone on the first Flots album
Troy Gregory's tone on Prong's Prove You Wrong
Everything else is false. 100% false.
Wow. A whole lot of my AZ bands' bass players here. I grew up on Flotz, Sacred, and Troy Gregory played on a couple Flotz records after Jason joined Metallica. He then played on that Prong Prove You Wrong record. All of these are HUGE influences of mine!!!
No one mentioned Rex Brown yet?? :P
John Myung. No, really.
Also a big fan of Cliff Burton's tones.
Fretless metal win.
Not flaming ok? Really, I'm not.
My favorite metal bass tone depends on the music.
TOPS is Chris Squire's tone. I always wanted that in metal. Think about it.
Next is a Geddy and Steve Harris tie. I know Geddy isn't metal, but you asked about TONE, not genre per se.
After that there are no choices. And worse, nothing after "Piece of Mind" was worth listening to for my taste in metal. Yes, I'm that old-fashioned and narrow. For example, even in 1987 I couldn't stand Metallica.
Ok, everyone, resume the thread. The irrational lunatic guy is done.
But I really do mean it about Chris Squire's tone. KILLER.
I like Peter Steels tone, though I don't think it would work in many bands other than ToN. Justin Chancellor is another favourite of mine.
Lemmy, Lemmy, Lemmy! Steve Harris and Ian Hill. Oh, and that vocalist/bassist guy from Slayer...
