I have a Candy Apple Red Strat Plus and the white pick guard has aged to a warm glow. I didn't like it that way when it first turned, but it has grown on me. It's not mint-colored, but it has definitely darkened and I don't smoke- it's purely from exposure to sunlight. I like white pearl, but not just any old one- it has to look just right. I also think woven Kevlar or carbon fiber would look really good.

Gold anodized is a very nice look. Here is a good question. What pickguard options did a Fiesta red jazz from 60-65 come with? White, mint and tort? Was gold anodized available with that color in the early 60 s?

Here is mine I did a few years ago, this bass was nice, a bit heavy but sounded great, neck a tad too wide for me at the nut though...

I originally bought the black anodized for the burgundy Jag, but after looking here:

http://www.offsetguitars.com/dressing_room/index.htm

I decided to go with the dark tort.

I know it's a guitar site, and there aren't an unlimited number of pick guards, but it is a good site anyway to give you an idea of what things will look like.

Some type of neon green or yellow? More realistically I'd probably vote for a black pearl

Another pic, showing the 'mint' again:

Also, depending on how "vintage correct" you want to be, I would rule out pearloid, and Gold Anodized never came with Jazz basses.

Nice collection petrus. I do want to stay period correct. Even though the bass isn't the correct brand.

What pickguards came on custom color jazz basses in and around 1960?

Pretty much just white or tort. More likely white on custom colors, but there are examples of fiesta's w/tort out there.

I think the gold anodized looks great with maple fretboards. For darker fretboards (rosewood) I've always liked Red and Mint Green.

That gold ano looks nice, but doesn't get my vote as it isn't "authentic" as has been stated. Jazz basses never had that, AFAIK. Nor any pearl. It broadcasts "aftermarket."

White, Mint or parchment are all good choices. I still think the tort is the best all-around choiuce, though. It has that reddish cast to go with the red body, and is more decoratively detailed than just a flat color.

Black plastic pickguards are something that a LOT of the older guys (like me) run screaming from, due to their lingering identification with the "dark ages" mid to late 1970's Fenders. I know they've been in use for a long time since (and on some very good instruments) but I feel the same kind of strong vintage identity with black (1975) pickguards that I do with gold anodized (1950's) pickguards.
