Whats a "P" Bass and Why is it called that?

I have been seeing here people mention a P bass and in my ignorance, I don't know what this is.

Another newbe question...
please be patient with me, I will understand in time.

Made by fender, single split coil pickup in the middle of the body. Provides a very bass heavy tone with very minimal flair. And I believe it was called a "precision bass" due to having frets which make it easier to accurately ("precisely") play the notes you want as opposed to a double bass which has no frets, obviously.

fender precision bass. it's called that because it has frets.

a p bass can be either a fender precision, a clone of a fender precision (like a sandberg california VS) or it could be a totally unrelated bass that just has a split-coil pickup out of a fender precision, all depending on who you ask

15 years ago I asked my then 6 year old son what the P in P Bas stands for. He told me it stands for Punky as in Punky Brewster. Sounds reasonable to me.

Yup. You'll see a lot of references to P Bass (Precision, or Precision-derived), and J Bass (Jazz Bass), as well as "P-Style" or "J-style" to describe the arrangement of the pickups.

And some manufacturers have built basses that look exactly like a Fender Precision, but are from a different brand. And example of this is the Aria Pro II "Precise Bass".

When leo fender created the "telecaster" guitar, in the 50´, he think in the doublebass player...

the instrument is too bigger, heavy, and need many practice to play because dont have frets.

So, Leo Fender created some think, called "bass guitar", and used the commercial name "presicion" because install frets in the neck, like guitar.

This frets, make very easy to play, dont need much practice for have good sound result, and was a revolution in bass, because the presicion bass guitar are very more light weight, and small. And very playable
