a p bass can be either a fender precision, a clone of a fender precision (like a sandberg california VS) or it could be a totally unrelated bass that just has a split-coil pickup out of a fender precision, all depending on who you ask

You'll see a lot of references to P Bass (Precision, or Precision-derived), and J Bass (Jazz Bass), as well as "P-Style" or "J-style" to describe the arrangement of the pickups.

the instrument is too bigger, heavy, and need many practice to play because dont have frets.
So, Leo Fender created some think, called "bass guitar", and used the commercial name "presicion" because install frets in the neck, like guitar.
This frets, make very easy to play, dont need much practice for have good sound result, and was a revolution in bass, because the presicion bass guitar are very more light weight, and small. And very playable
