Where do you folks like to shop for used gear ? Include both Web and otherwise.
Before I ask my main question, here is a sub-question of that.
How often do pickguards for Guild 300 series roll thru here and places like Ebay.?
I ordered a snazzy pickguard from Pickguard Heaven for my Guild B302 Fretless in Gold Rush pearl, one of their more expensive sheets of vinyl. They had something that would mimic the bakelite original, black vinyl with blk/wht/blk/wht sides. But it wouldn't fool anybody...its just not bakelite, thats why I went with something different and figured I would wait for an original to come by.
Will this be an endless wait considering many of these did break around the jack as did mine or do you see them a few times a year? I don't have the new guard yet, but I think the Gold Rush pearl is going to look pretty classy with the aged mahagony. I will post pics if anyone cares.
My other related question is what websites or shopping outside of Ebay or Amazon do you folks like to find used gear ? Some of the ones I had come across were only by accident so I think its a fair question to ask sans lots of research and dart throwing. I can tell you one of my favorites are those local 'Trader' magazines (small newspapers really) that advertise everything from washing machines to RVs. I have pulled some nice amps and guitars out of those at phenomenal prices. Looking for something very specific is a non starter however. My pickguard could show up in there tomorrow or never, no exaggeration. I can also say its been a trip traveling to peoples homes to look at stuff. Some of the people and places are right out of the twilight zone.
eBay, Craigslist, local music shops are where I look for used gear.
At local stores... Guitar Center when I lived in the states, Bass Gallery here in London
Right here on the TalkBass Classifieds!
You can search what's in your local GC, or any GC. Worst case scenario, you can return it to the local store and if you're a smooth talker, they might return your shipping cost too. It's the most risk-free way to buy used.
in your case, like you said, what you want will rarely be available.
normally, i like craigslist first- generally the best deals are to be had there. not much to choose from though, and sometimes you'll have to travel a fair distance and the commutes suck sometimes (i've had to go to brooklyn many times, upstate, ext.) the crackheads and weirdos are a blast to haggle with, though.
then ebay- bigger selection of used stuff, and often good deals, always fair prices to be had (for the most part.) the annoying thing is auctions, though they often yield good prices, sometimes (like the MIM strat i THOUGHT i was going to win the other day..) someone else REALLY wants that item for auction, and you just cant have it unless you're prepared to pay almost retail prices.
retails stores, even on used stuff, its usually not that great. pedals that retail at $179 they'll be selling for $159 used, when ebay their every day price would be $100-$120. that said, one great place is guitar centers used section online- as we all know, GC employees mess stuff up often. i have noticed that anything up there for a decent price is gone really, really fast. only look if you've got the cheddar to throw down, because its very frustrating missing great deals!
