Bolt-on necks should always
have lateral clearance. Any is usually enough, and you don't want to look at a lopsided gap you could drop a quarter into, but there always
should be some. The critical fit is the face
. The sides should be clearanced to the depth of the pocket.
This "tight neck pocket" stuff is a bubba obsession that builders couldn't educate people out of, so they started caving to it, with negative results...but the bubbas are happy.
