Why do I want a Ric so bad?

I've been feverishly been listening to The Jam lately, and every time I just go look at Ric's. They don't exactly do tonally what I want, but I just can't shake wanting one. I've kept my eye open for a copy to try to get my GAS under control, but even then, it's hard.

HELP

I also know that Rics are fairly common "buyers remorse" basses, which is something that I'm trying desperately to avoid. I'm traditionally a Fender P/J/Tele guy, just for reference.

Can you borrow one for a week or two to see if the gas subsides?

Oh you really want one........I promise you do. You want it like you want the hot chick in the grocery store.

The Ric won't let you down but after paying that much money you'll realize that Leo Fender had it right the first time - BUT, you'll still have a very cool Ric to play on when that chick from the grocery store comes in the bar you're playing at on Friday.

Play one, that took care of my RIC GAS. Just not for me - of course I am in the minority it seems.

It's that crazy sexy shape. It's the hot chick in the Ferrari - the Pbass is your Mom in a house dress.

Same problem here, I've been wanting a Ric since I started listening to the Jam. (foxton is amazing)

Buying one straight after I fix my car!

my problem is I can't decide between a red one or a blue one......truthfully, they don't sound so great but there is something timeless and very cool about them!

So, my dad once said..."you ever go to the grocery store, and everyone there is just REALLY f***ing ugly?"
and then went on to talk about how he went to a different grocery store and it was full of really attractive people.

But yeah, that whole "wanting a Ric so hard" syndrome happens....I cured mine the old fashioned way...buy buying a rick.

Actually, the Ric is the girl you date, but the P is the one you marry...

I cured my Ric GAS by playing a few. Fine looking instruments, but they're simply not for me ergonomically or tonally.

Heh. Same here. And it's gorgeous. And people always like the way it looks.

... but when I'm just noodling around at home, it never gets played.

I picked up a very accurate Ric copy for similar reasons, and I think had I sprung for the real thing (at the real price) I wouldn't be disappointed in the least. However, after owning the copy, I don't think I ever would buy a real one. They're gorgeous, classic, iconic instruments, and you know they'll hold value, but I think there's a sort of childlike wonderment involved, an expectation that such a unique bass will play and sound unlike anything else. They're kind of a one-trick pony though, and I think that's where the remorse comes from. You can dial in a jazz bass very closely to the Rickenbacker sound, but you can only get a Ric to do different shades of maple-bacon growl.

One of my friends plays a vintage 4003... I'm not sure that will help.

I really wanted a Ric for a long time, but after playing one... not for me. I highly suggest playing one first as their ergonomics are definitely different than most other basses.
