Why are old Peavey's so cheap?

Because they are so cheap.

The Peavey stuff from the 70s is not high quality.

Off the top of my head, the ones to avoid includes Millennium BXP, Fury I & II, Grind BXP, Zodiac BXP and Cirrus BXP. The confusing part is that most of these model names are also the names used for US-made versions, so it pays to do your homework to know the differences between them.

I've never seen a T-40 made in the 70's that wasn't extremely well made. Now if you're talking about the amplifiers, that's something for a different forum.

Either way, if the worst you can say about Peavey is to rag on the stuff made in the 70's, that's pretty weak .

Peavey Furys always intrigued me but I've never played one. They are sleeker-looking P basses with thinner necks. Sounds good to me. If there was a readily available 5-string model, I'd definitely check it out.

MIA Peavey basses are unreliable, inconsistent in quality, sound bad and play terribly! They will make your teeth turn green and ruin your libido!

I used to work in a shop that carried a lot of different brand names. I played, and even setup, just about every Peavey bass you can think of. I never liked any. HOWEVER, the build quality was fine. They just weren't my thing. A lot of them (USA Cirrus for example) just were way too bright for me out of the box. And I'm not a slim neck fan. But, again, they were very well made instruments. I wish I could get into them because they are bargains.

I know some people here love Peavey stuff ... I am always disappointed with Peavey. That is my personal opinion. If it works for you guys then go for it. Peavey will get the job done but it is always a lower priced option for when I can't afford what I really want.

I've had a dozen or so Peavey bases over the years, the only one I've had issues with was pre-owned by a guy who wasn't very good with a soldering iron and left a billion cold joints in it.

I'd really like to say YMMV here but really out doesn't, pretty much everyone agrees that they're built like tanks.

smcd, let me begin by saying that you are correct in everything you've posted, but I read your posts and see that face in your avatar and can't help but wonder if that's the permanent expression on your face. you are "passionate" in your views.

the value of foundation basses on the used market reflects what they sold for new I think. USA fury and foundation basses were priced somewhere between squier and MIM Mexican basses. they were probably a 1/4 of the price of a new MIA p bass or J bass at the time. so they were never expensive even when new.

incidentally, I rescued my 92 fury from my parents detached garage last weekend where it had sat for ten years with no climate control. the neck was exactly how I remembered it and it was still almost in tune. I plugged it in to my Mesa 400+ and Aguilar GS412 and it about blew my head off. it sounded freaking amazing, completely competitive with my AVRI '62 p bass in tone.

I have a Zodiac and I love it. I've never had even a tiny problem with it. I guess I was lucky.

I guess there was a Zodiac DE, which is the more desirable model, and BXP models, which were cheaper. Not saying you should avoid all import Peavey basses, but you can usually get a US made bass for close to the same price as a lot of imports.

Let me start by saying I currently own over 50 basses including Alembic, Modulus, Tobias, Fender (USA and Japan), Rickenbacker, Guild, Spector (NS5CRFM) and countless others I have owned. It always cracks me up when I show up at a gig and whip out the Q6 and people that know what it is ooh and aahh all over it and then I pull out the GV and play it all night! Although lately I have been taking a TL5 for a back-up so the Modulus stays home. I think I spent about $875.00 on the GV and the TL5. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what the Q6 cost?
