When cedar Lobe #1438 was relisted at 2 bills (shipped), I couldn't NOT buy it - even my wife told me to get it! Guess that giant knot hole drew me in (I'm a sucker for that stuff). We'll see how it finishes up ... NBD Friday?

On another topic, how about a Hyper #1398b update? Lately I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to level (thickness plane) my bass blanks, besides by hand. The bodies are too wide to go thru my planer and I don't own a large drum sander either. So, after hearing about what the Wagner Safe -T-Planer could do once attached to your drill press, I decided to try and find one I could afford. (They went out of business recently and the ones you find for sale are 3x the price they used to be new, but I recently found a replacement for it built by a new company.) Anyway, I bought the tool and have spent some hours getting my drill press set up to use it. This meant building a proper table for it to hold a bass and also make a small tool to make sure your table surface is level to the drill's chuck. Saturday night I got brave enough to try it out! It went well, although it sure created a mess - this little tool shoots sawdust in every direction! Here's what it looked like ...
Due to inexperience (and terror), I took a tad more off the top than I wanted to, but the overall thickness is now where I want it. This bass started out very thick and thus too heavy, so I needed to slim it down. Now it more matches the JB blank, which I planed too, just didn't take any photos of it (too preoccupied).

I could take it to a cabinet shop and let them run it thru their big drum sanders for a fee, or build a router sled (which I plan to do BTW) and router it level, build my own drumsander or use the drill press planer. Anyway, it kind of bothers me to take it somewhere and let them level it for me, so I guess I have the other 3 options to explore, but I doubt I will be building a drum sander (or buying a planer wider than the 12.5" unit I currently own). It's all an adventure I dare say!

If it was anyone else, I'd be cautious, but for you....... I also want to say that the work you did on my guitar was superb. It is truly the best of it's kind. I'm in Tru-Oil heaven. Carry on. |

On the orbital, I don't own one yet, but the problem with any hand-held devise is that it is well, hand-held. The drill press planer or any fixed machine or jig driven device assure a uniform amount of wood being removed all the way across the body and the neck block. I still need to learn how to use and sharpen a hand plane though - now that's a skill set!
One thing I learned SINCE using the drill press planer is to use it at a lower speed than I did. I think this would have resulted in a smoother overall result and it reduces burning on the wood. Also, I think some of the initial passes I made with it were too deep - I know now how to take just a little off and make more passes. All this kind of thing comes with experience though and I have to learn thru doing. Next tiime will be easier, and at a slower speed, less messy!

Not sure why it wouldn't sell at the original asking price, unless it's the big knot hole that goes all the way thru - heck, it won't fall out after I insert some epoxy in the gaps. Very trademark Wishbass, BTW.
Here's what she looks like as of now ...
The plan for this one I think, is to just really keep it simple; clean it up and maybe put in a DPDT switch for the humbucker, and as Steve would say; "slick her up". I will angle cut the FB end of course and look at putting in a small scallop cut at the bottom, but nothing's been decided yet. Tonally, it needs nothing other than raising up the p-up - great mwah and some growl to it as well. BTW, the route for the pickup is so much cleaner on this one - he must have his CNC set-up working. Fun!
Merry Christmas everyone and Happy Jesus' Birthday!

Hipper 1386 arrived in Greenville SC from 49sfine 'Scott's Shop' in Austin TX a few days ago. I opened her up this morning with the family for Christmas.
(Of course they knew that 'daddy' had gotten himself another bass. Heee)
Hipper #1386 is Mahogany with Purple Heart board and a poplar veneer sandwich in the body as well.
The neck is I think walnut and persimmon as a lot of Steves basses are more recently.
Wish shipped it to me unfinished several months ago and I did most of the final sanding and some light shaping before sending it to Scott to do his amazing finishwork magic and to clean up any of my efforts too.
The Hipper model has been the most beautiful to my eye since I first learned about Wishbasses only a year or so ago. And since I had wanted a Mahogany bass for many years already I thought these would be a good candidate.
I contacted Steve and asked him about a Mahogany Hipper and he had a blank that he had started. After sending me a picture of it I decided to get it. I was able to pick out the fingerboard wood and go with the humbucker pickup. So now these months later it is here in its finished state. YAY!
It was pretty unrefined when I first got it of course and badly in need of being finished by someone who excels at that.
49s did his purpleheart nut and bridge and his wood cavity cover and such as that--- along with his great high gloss finish.
It turned out as great as I hoped it would. Plays great and sounds sooo even across all strings! I will esp use the beautiful mwaah from this one when plucked up away from the bridge.
This is now my 3rd Wish you might say. And the 2nd one that 49s did for me.
The Mahogany body color is beautiful. The only thing I changed was to immediately swap out the stock plastic volume knob with a solid brass chrome one.
And 49s if you have any more pics or better ones of your work on #1386 to post please do.
Many thanks to you 49s!!
Merry Christmas Wishbassers! Tom in Upstate South Carolina.

I did not do a proper "bass in space' photo spread on #1386 due in part to my hurry to get it shipped/delivered by Christmas ... One of the unexpected joys of doing these refins is the relationships I am forming with the bass's owners - it's hard to measure that really, but I am so grateful for it!
Here's a couple of shots of the bass right after I put her together as it hangs in the shop waiting to be boxed up. Note the difference from the 'before' picture. Who knew that this mahogany would turn out so awesome looking?!
Happy New Year Everyone!

Great news from this side of the world also!
I managed to remove the FB of the Kewelish without any damage. I glued the FB very sturdy with PVA. After seeing this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhAZSiRfDB4
I started dripping vinegar using the same method. After an hour the FB came loose with just a little damage to the neck. This won't be in seight after reglueing the FB!
So, if alcohol and steam doesn't do the trick, try vinegar!

It's been a wall hanging for almost a year now. Maybe I'll try this and then put a fretless board on her. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
