What a joy and fun thing to do: carving wood for your own guitar!
It's pretty hard to stop! I only have a few normal DIY chisels but working with basswood is so easy! The only thing to worry about is going to fast.
Anyway: great fun. I can recomment doing something like this yourself!
Buy a wishbass neck and start some fun.

Here's a few shots for y'all...
Thanks to those who have paved the way, making this a manageable job for me. I've played it as my regular bass for several weeks now and loving it.
I play through a MarkBass combo amp (Jeff Berlin model), and with the available tone control there, the single volume knob on the bass is blissfully minimal.
All the best,
Shane | Beautiful job on the refinish Shane! |

I have a drop tuner on my Cort fretless as well, and while it's not as useful as a B string, it does allow for the occasional low D and E-flat when needed.
Since the Wish has the tuners mounted sideways, I could only find the "lefty" drop tuner with the right key shape in chrome when I was shopping for the new parts, thinking I would just stay with the chrome tuners that came with the bass.
Well, then the contrast of the black strings and the ebony nut and bridge kind of demanded black tuners, so the chrome drop tuner is an oddball. I'm now aware of a source for a "lefty" drop tuner that is correct for this setup, but the price is not right.
Thinking of leaving the chrome just because it catches people's attention who don't necessarily know what they're looking at.
All the best,
Shane |

The logo itself could be a nice bass for itself but on the bass in the current shape.....no, not my cup of tea.

On another crazy, wild note, here is a teaser shot of how my weekend went with Nemo #549! More later when I have more time and a clearer head ...
Yes, this IS the back of the neck and that hole goes all the way thru! Seems that the truss rod on this one was installed leaving less than 1/16" of wood at the bottom of the channel (at it's deepest point). I spent a good 5 or 6 hours getting the old truss rod out (yeah, yeah I know - it seemed like a good idea at the time...) and when I finally got the rod cut in two, as I was trying to get under it with a tool to pry the second half up and out of the channel, this happened. Ugh ...............

BillyB's Arrow may be the only all-original that I actually know of!

Originally Posted by 5108audio Nice refin work guys. Does anyone keep them 'factory direct' anymore? | Both my Wishbasses are still "factory". But mostly it's because I haven't got around to the wishass projects yet. Both are easily playable the way they are, but there are just certain things that irritate me. One is the single pickup way down by the bridge. I really don't like playing basses with bridge pickup soloed. I can dig Wishes idea of a extended fretless fingerboard which doesn't leave room for a neck pickup, but for me I'd much prefer sawing some of that fingerboard off (as the guys here do) and installing two pickups to mix/match. The REALLY nasty job on the teardrop aluminum cover plate is an irritation that I plan to replace in come nice wood. (with added controls for two pickups) And one wish has a pretty rough spot on the back of the neck. You can play it but it's just an irritation being there. Same goes for some minor body shaping on the overall appearance.
So I know what I want to do and there's nothing as serious as what some of the guys here do. And of course the icing on the cake is that if you are taking time to round some corners and smooth out some wood, a nice true-oil finish brings the whole thing up your personal booteek level! They are very playable instruments now, but there will great satisfaction out of removing all those minor things that irritate me and making them look like a million. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
