Yamaha RBX374 vs BB424 | Update: Bought the BB424!

Hi all,

Today I had my first bass lesson and I'm buying my first bass tomorrow.

I'm thinking in buying one of these basses, the Yamaha RBX374 or the BB424
The 424 is around $130 more expensive than the 374
The 424 is a passive bass and the 374 is active.

Do you think that on the long term I'll be happier with the 424?

Why does Yamaha makes one active bass that is cheaper than on passive?

The music I prefer to listen is hard rock.

These are all rookie questions, but if you have a moment you could help

Tnx!

I'm not a fan of the RBX preamp, so I would be inclined to get the BB.

Active is not better than passive, just different.

+1. And the BBs have very hot pickups. I would take the BB over the RBX in a heartbeat. Actually, I did - I've bought and traded around a fair amount of stuff in my short time as a bassist so far, but the BB415 is not going anywhere.

Go with he BB

The BB for sure. Great bass bro. If you want a great cheap active bass get a Sub by Sterling, earnie ball. I love mine powerful preamp good sound, a good rock bass. If i were in your shoes would go with the BB no doubt . No pun intended

I've never played an RBX but the BB appeals to me more.

Said and done!

Here it is!

One more question... I didn't know the Yamaha came with a cable so I bought an eurocable with 5 meters...
The problem is that when I tried both cables, the cheap cable that came with the bass sounds much louder than the eurocable.
(There is no noise on either one.)

Any idea why it sounds louder?

Here are the pics of the cables:

The eurocable is double shielded (whatever that means)

The cheap one I have no idea, how can I tell?

Maybe the CHEAP one in NOT a guitar cable, but a speaker cable?

I don't think so, it came on the same case with the new bass

Congrats on the bass!

Are you sure about the cable? It would be very unusual for a relatively short cable to sound much louder than another relatively short cable, unless one of them is seriously damaged. You might get some loss of high frequencies in a very long cable without a buffer in front of it but that's a much more subtle thing.

Tnx for the congrats

Just for you to have an idea how low the cable sounds, the amp is this one:

And to get the compressor light to begin slightly to light up I have to put
the compressor to the max, the bass volume to max and the gain at 50%. (I'm connecting the bass to the passive input)
And strike the cords really hard.

Something is not right, I think Ill go to the shop and change the cable.

Congrats! Nice bass! Is it possible that the Eurocable jack plugs are a little larger than the other cable and you aren't pushing them in far enough, making for poor contact at the jacks?

Tnx!

No, this morning I tested the cables with a multimeter and theres a short circuit between the tip and the mass of the eurocable.
It's definitly broken, I'll try to go to the shop today for a replacement.

I should have thought of the multimeter measurement before...

Regards!

Those BB424s are a LOT of bass for the money. Sure they aren't as sexy as Fenders (I own a BB424X) but they sound so good and are really comfortable to play.

Hold on to the Allen keys that came with the bass. The truss rod one is shorter than a usual key to fit in the wee route at the end of the neck (at the body end).
