"what you bring to an audition matters"

Kinda funny, but, around here, I can count on no one knowing what Valenti, Sadowsky, or Alleva are.

So, I bring my Fender 57 PRI for sitches like that. Everyone knows what a Fender Precision is.

Yep.. I always notice that here in local music stores too..

You see Fender, Sandberg, Ibanez, Spector, Rickenbacker, Duesenberg, etc. etc.

And when they walk in, they don't even look around and they all go : ''Hey, nice Fender!''

Huh? Is that really you only care about?

+1, that'd get me a lot further than Monk Montgomery's bass. None of the people I play with would have a clue who he was. They'd take a look at that bass and ask me what garage sale I found it at. A couple 6'ers of Fat Tire or Newcastle though, I'd be a HERO. lol

Even if I wont the lottery, I'm 95% sure I wouldn't spend $51k on one bass. Like Chef said, ten basses maybe... but not one bass. lol

This too... true and sad. Going into an unknown situation, I always grab one of my Fenders because as a bassist, that's what I'm "supposed to play."

One time: "Why don't you play a Fender?" (had my Stingray HH)

I think the seller is full of crap.

Here's a quote that he put up on his eBay ad where he clearly skates around the direct question, hoping to baffle with B.S.:

I WAS ASKED THE FOLLOWING TODAY:
1. What documentation do you you have that says that this was Monk's bass?

I have been friends with Byron Shaw, his step-child for 20 years. Byron was raised by his grandmother, who was Monk's wife.
www.facebook.com/angieseegers - Byron asked me to play violin at a sold out Reggae on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheatre last August, and we will do that again August 2013.

I am known in the jazz community, and live with world-reknowned keyboardist Scott Kinsey. This makes it so I was/am the right choice to get the word out to the bassists, personally - which had been done 2 weeks prior to listing it. Jimmy Earl, Matthew Garrison, Peter Erskin (drums), Victor Wooten, Gary Willis, Jimmy Hasslip, Jeff Berlin, Alphonso Johnson....and so forth...

The simple answer would have been: I have no documentation.

Hell, John Entwistle's Guild Starfire was only $20,000.

This seems way too high, even if real.

I believe the ad is legit but the price is more than twice what the bass is probably worth.

Zero interest for me.
Or 4 Fodera's for that matter. Def not for me. The days of paying a crazy amount of money like that for Basses even vintage ones are about over. Even if the economy rebounds tremendously many folks have learned their lessons. Many bass makers are even making GREAT vintage sounding basses for far less than 51 G'S trust me.

How is this legit? This can't be a '66, can it? Block inlays, 70's PU position. This bass screams 'I'm from the seventies!'.

I won't lie, I had to look the man up.

If this auction had been for his original P...maybe they'd have something. As it is, it's just another old J.

I don't think anyone would buy it, even if it was priced sensibly, to impress other musicians at rehearsal. Buying to impress is silly, in any case.

Just kidding, really. But seriously, a price like that for a musicians bass? For something that would probably be stuck in a climate controlled case next to a humidor. Conspicuous consumerism, really.
+1, but not kidding.

Nice bass. Lots of "mojo", but it's not worth a penny more to me than a brand new one.

I've never understood the whole "vintage" thing.

- Price is too high
- Almost nobody knows who Monk was
- Seller has zero feedback

No thanks, I'll pass.
