Harper was born in Asheville, NC and moved to Philadelphia when he was an infant. He studied music in high school and was recommeded to J.J. Johnson by Jimmy Heath in 1961. He joined Johnson's sextet and stayed for over a decade. He performed and recorded with Kenny Baron, Red Garland, Shirley Scott, Joe Williams and others. He also performed with guitarist Wes Montgomery and legendary trumpeter Clifford Jordan.

Alfred enjoyed a brief acting career in the 1970's.

His last CD was "Nothing is Wrong " with Odean Pope and Khan Jamal.
