I guess it's just a hangover from the old days, when the only possible career trajectory for a band was form - rehearse - pub/clug gigs - showcase gigs - management - record deal, but I still get bass students of mine who are obsessed with the idea that getting signed to a record label is the be-all and end-all of being a musician.
