- Someone in Spokane with an upright bass violin; let me play that a moment, surprising myself when I got a nice musical riff without thinking. I'd never handled any bass before, trying to play one; though was part of an improvising duo playing flute with a bass violinist awhile, so probably had been attentive without noticing

Red Kelly, Chuck Deardorf; my homies off the top of my head, Red Mitchell live visiting Red Kelly a couple weeks, Stanley Clarke, Lorree Gardener another homie the other half of the improvising duo I was part of on flute in the mid '70s a few months with her Epiphone "Birtha," Steve Luceno Lorree's mentor, Ray Brown, Bert Wilson's bassists a plenty, many players in genres outside of jazz playing often heard music, like the Fender Rhodes I never think about and am surprised to hear so many places if I pay attention, Scott La Faro, Charlie Haden, Percy Heath, Jaco Pastorious, Charles Mingus and as an author, George Duvivier, Milt Hinton and as a photographer, Jack Bruce, Slam Stewart, Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, one of Miles Davis's electric bass guitarists I heard after then with McCoy Tyner, Sonny Fortune, Alphonse Muzon and Mutume I keep thinking is Ron Howard imaging I have his name confused with the child actor cum movie director who contributed to one of the most impressive saxophonists I've ever heard that evening in '82 as an ensemble all playing to the same high standard, Mike Canfield for being understanding, a friend and critical while also a fine musician, also someone suckering me into continuing music after high school I'd never be suited to professionally as a joke who ought to be boiled in oil nice to count coup on any chance I get, and others including Norman Durkee for playing an unusual tone bar bass with his left hand atop his Fender Rhodes about as long as the piano, a stage 73.
