Are they still making DJ's? I didn't see any on the website.

I am kind of GASing for one I saw recently. Maple with blocks five string Lakland with a black body and white pickguard...a Lakland fiver Geddy Lee!

I want it BAD!

DJs are currently off the line... no official statement has been made, but they disappeared from all sites, etc...

No DJ's or similar design being made at this time, but that might change.

I must be getting wiser..or dumber, or something. I have found that I am completely content with passive 4 string basses. Now, don't get me wrong...the minute lakland announces a 66-94 or whatever it may be, I will be the first in line to buy one...but my ACDJ and BG4 are totally killing right now. I could use some pragmatic advice from guys who have tried these things. I am thinking about putting a J-Retro in my ACDJ. Now, I knwo I said I liked it passive, but an active EQ would be nice for some of the stuff I do. Do I look at a J-Retro or an Audere? Anyone who has used them would be more than welcome to chime in. I am also considering possibly getting a decade to go with my other two. I can listen to the clips online, but I would like some real world reviews from those who have them. If I got a decade, should I make it active and leave my DJ passive? Hmmmmmmm

Wiser I'd go passive single coiled on the Decade, but that's just me. Love the single coils in that bass! Nice grit you won't get with the humbuckers. Singles and active would be cool, but they don't come that way. You could always add a preamp later...

I'm a huge Audere fan. I have one in my JO5.

I think they sound very much like your passive instrument with everything flat.

I like especially like the Z mode.

Some people complain about the Z switch location, but I've never had a problem with it.

I think it's an excellent addition to a great sounding passive instrument.

I don't know much about the J retro, but I know it's based on Marcus Miller's preamp.

I've owned 3 J-retro's and 2 Audere pre's, so I think I can help. Of course none of them were in a Lakland.

The J-retro: In short, don't do it. If you like your passive sounds, don't go with the J-retro. It boosts the lows and highs right out of the gate, and colors the tone. It's a modern sounding pre. Quality is top notch of course, and it's killer for those who want a Marcus-y active thing. Output is pretty hot, but not blazing.

Audere: Excellent pre as well, just like the J-retro, but very different. In mid-Z mode, the Audere retains the passive sound of the bass when the EQ is flat. The other Z-modes had very little use to me, but they basically brighten or darken the tone. It's a bit too extreme for my tastes. The 2-band version is VERY different from the 3-band version. The 2-band has a very high frequency center on the lows, and a fairly low center on the highs. It is not the model to choose if you want to get a modern sound at all. It is however EXCELLENT for those times when you love your passive sound, but just want a little more fatness down bottom, as it basicaly boosts the lows and low-mids at the same time. The treble knob on the 2-band acts as a quasi-PTC to some extent when you want to cut highs. Turning it up doesn't add treble or ping, but more of that grind. Think Geddy Lee, not Marcus Miller.

The 3-band Audere is a lower center bass control, and a higher-centered treble control, with a mid-center that lets you boost for some extra "cut", or scoop the mids for slap. The treble is more glassy and pingy than the 2-band, but it's still not a razor top end. The bass control opens the low end a good bit without making it as fat and old-school as the 2-band. It's still not as zingy and modern sounding as the J-retro, as it still retains the passive sound of your bass when flat, and has a less "open" voice when you start boosting. IMO this is a good thing since it's not as extreme, but if you really want a pre that gets very zingy, I'd go with the J-retro.

IMO, I would leave that DJ passive and get an outboard pre, such as the Sadowsky, Aguilar or even the J-retro. You'll be able to sculpt just as well with that, but still have your passive bass intact.

Thanks Jason. That makes sense and I have been looking for a few other goodies to put on my pedaltrain mini...lol
