short answer, not really
...murphy's music in irving usually has some cool genz benz gear, and dwayne at zoo music in garland is a cool cat, he's a bass player, though they don't have a lot of bass stuff

+2, Zoo Music in Garland is the only good music store in the area. They do carry Mesa and Genz Benz, along with the garden variety stuff, and Dwayne is a really cool guy. But yeah, drive down to Austin for the goods. Oh, and welcome to town, (I'm in Richardson).

Pretty slim pickin's in this town, I'm sorry to say. Too bad MARS went away and Larry Morgan shut down. If you hit ALL the local GCs on a weekend, you just MIGHT find something you need or can use. These would be closest to you: Lewisville (near Vista Ridge Mall at I-35 & 121), Plano (I-75, north of Geo Bush), Farmer's Branch (635, west of I-75/east of I-35) and Dallas (I-75, south of 635, north of Woodall Rogers).
Oh yeh, WELCOME!

All true. If I'm desperate, the GC on 75 is my favorite. They seem to have a little better selection in the bass cave.
Having said that, most of my business goes to Bass Emporium in Austin. It gives me an excuse (and allows a write-off) to hit the Red River and 6th St. area.
Encore Music is almost right across the street from Bass Emporium. My favorite shop for hard-to-find CD's and stuff.

Sky Guitars in Denton is not bad. Their tech work is very competent, fast, and reasonably priced. I had the output jacks on my Sadowsky and my Lakland replaced before hitting the road about a month ago. The only thing they had in stock at the time that got my attention was a very nice Road Worn P-bass.

Austin is the place to go. Bass Emporium and Austin Bass Traders. Luckily my son chose to go to UT Austin. Now I have an excuse to make the trip from Dallas to Austin every once in a while.

Is Zoo music still stacking guitars on top of one another? I went in there back when I still lived in Arlington and I couldn't get around. I walk on crutches and I was afraid I was going to bust my a$$ and break something.

The one in Fort Worth has them all hung up on the wall as high as they can go.

That HAS to be the same cat. They literally had guitars stacked like cord wood on top of one another, and the guy kept following me around repeatedly saying don't fall, you might damage something. My Pop fiinally told the moron, look you've got tons of guitars laying on one another and you're worried of a guy on crutches damaging something? We promptly left and never returned.

Do they have more than one location now? Been a few years since I tread that soil .

Coming from the Austin area to here was a big change for me. GC Plano isn't bad for amps sometimes (depending on what they decide to stock at the time and what your lookng for). GC Central Dallas (the one off 75 in Dallas) is pretty good for basses, except they seem to have either beginner stuff or higher end, not much in the middle. GC N. Dallas has always seemed like a waste of a trip for me. Very liitle amp or bass selection.

it's important to note that there is a zoo music in dallas, and one in garland--even though the one in dallas is very near the garland store and the garland 'border'...the one in garland is where dwayne is the manager, and larry morgan used to be next door...
the one in dallas is the one that is a 2-story structure where you can literally see stacks of old amps through the windows on the mezzanine level from the parking lot, and i don't walk on crutches, and i'm still afraid to walk in, ha

Another fan of Bass Emporium here.... it will be worth your trip to Austin! Also check out a place called Guitar Resurrection. They have some incredible vintage stuff there. These two places are only a few miles from each other.
