Thanks everyone. I'm finding like many threads at talkbass.com the general answer is try basses until you find what you like. That is great advice, except 6-string basses aren't stocked much anywhere near me.
Vicarious experience can only get any of us so far, but I appreciate your efforts nonetheless.

Schecter's Stiletto Studio 6 is an incredible bass, with a chunkier neck.

Ibanez's BTB and SR series have slimmer necks and smaller fretwire.

Brice (from rondomusic.com) does some very pretty 6-strings at excellent prices, and Kurt is fantastic when it comes to customer service.

My friend's Peavey Grind 6 is very nice. A LOT of bass for the money. Even has a good B string.

the Tune TWB63 and Peavey Cirrus 6 instantly come to mind for 6ers under a grand. In fact, those are pretty much the only two I would consider lol. The tune can actually be hand for arounf the ~$500 area but they sound incredible not only for their price but even compared to stuff that costs 4 times as much.

there are 3 Ibanez soundgears at my GC. One is the cheaper version, the other two are about $600 and play very nicely.

I don't have one personally, but the reviews make them seem like a great value, far below your max price.
