Stephen Perkins

Hi Mike, Jane Addiction are one of my all time favourite bands, and you had the opertunity to work with Stephen Perkins when you recorded / toured for Porno For Pyros. When working with a drummer like Perkins, a very talented drummer with a unique approch to drumming, do you have to change your own playing to match with him. I imagine it is difficult to lock with a drummer like him.

Re: Stephen Perkins

hi,

the trick is to play the holes and leave some for him to play. everyone's different w/drums and so it should be w/the bass too. many ways to pet a cat. the key is listening and grabbing the feel, thump up the beat. the note closest to us is the kick drum so I start there. there's also reading the dynamic so you can get big and soft together, make the music breathe. w/perk, you have to be in the moment and that's a healthy thing.

Lightbulb Banyan

agyeman,

If you ever get a chance you should check out Banyan, which features Perkins on drums on Watt on thudstaff (as well as Nels Cline and Willie Waldman)

Some of the best interaction between a drummer and bassist I've ever seen. I've witnessed the magic of Banyan on at least 20 occasions and my jaw drops every time.

Thanks for the link Mike, I will check it out. I consider Steve Perkins to be one of, if not the greatest drummer in the world today. I love it when drums and bass interact, I will be sure to check it out. Any bass player who can keep up with Steve must be a great bassist
