hi,
some answers from watt:
1. to "hammer" means you make the note by just coming down hard w/the fretting finger and not plucking the string w/the plucking hand at the same time. this is called a "hammer on" too.
2. "drop-d" means tuning your 'e' string (the fattest one on a four string bass) to 'd' instead of 'e' - likewise for "drop-c," tune the 'e' to 'c.' now, the looser your strings, the more fret noise and flabby the strings feel. that's why I stick mainly w/standard tuning. however, my opera, "contemplating the engine room," had the 'e' dropped down to 'd' for the whole piece. of course, the record was partly for my dear friend, d. boon! also, I could get the lower octave note for the 'd' on the 'a' string.
3. the fender squire p-bass is a good beginning bass. pretty solid! they're all different though so play a bunch and get the one that feels best for you.
