help!!!!!

it may seem like a dumb question but here it goes......

i play my bass on the frets like put my finger right on the silver bar(fret).
and i know some other people that play inbetween the frets. am i wrong or is he wrong or is there no wrong way. could you please explain this.

Well, the correct way is to get as close to the back of the fret as possible without playing directly on the fret. If you play on the fret you get a buzzing sound most of the time. By fretting directly behind the fret you get the most downward pressure on the string against the fret.

Or maybe you could go fretless and then you'd be just fine.

If you are right on the fret or right behind
the fret and its not buzzing then you've got it right.
Intonation is important and it will help you
if you ever decide to pick up fretless.

I play in the middle of the frets with no problems. But I have always read, that the correct position is right behind the fret.
On a fretless...your finger assumes the role of the fretwire. That is the reson that some people like fretlines, so that they know where to put their fingers.

I think accuracy of fretting is one of the most important things to practice and even on fretless you really want to aim for "just behind where the fret would be" or you will probably be playing sharp. Playing by ear is probably the ultimate to aim for, but on fretted basses you are inviting problems by playing in the middle of the frets - like intonation problems, buzzing and unwanted overtones. There's no doubt that the best advice to give is to aim for what Chris says.
