Yeah...that 980 is HOT. If I were looking for another (or a fretless) that would be the one...
|
Yep, I'm drooling over that guy. I've been wanting an HH bass for quite a while but don't wanna spend the $ some companies ask. I've been pondering a G&L Tribby but the Douglas is a neck-thru so I'm working on being patient. I've pondered just getting the fretless but I don't wanna have to stare at the fretboard all night when we play out (with my meager skillz).
Again, Kurt said no plans in the short term but that he'd consider a fretted 980 at some point.

manjonning asked about active P's and J's.
No, all the SXes I have seen are passive. However, I am now of the opinion that you do not want to scrimp on a pre. So if you want a NICE, active SX P or J my advice would be to get either an SJB or ASH SPJ (I think these are the only PJ's built on a J body) and put an Audere JZ3 in it. This is my opinion after putting one in my SJB-57. You can thank me later!

SX SJMB-62
Duckbutter,
You could order the maple neck from Rondo and put it on yourself...of course the bass would be $60.00 more at that point.

Most likely having a thread with too many posts causes server issues when users run a search... Probably takes too long to skim through a thread when there's more than 1000 posts.

I have an SX57P-bass on its way to me today. It'll also get me into the Official Black 'n' Maple Basses Club.
Aside from an Epiphone Ripper reissue I had for a couple of weeks last year, this will be my first bass in about 10 years.

You will not regret buying that bass, I bought an SPB-57 a couple weeks ago, and I really love it. After putting on some light gauge Boomers it has become my favorite bass. I now regret the 2 years I spent cursing the simplicity of Precision Basses.

I will also send Kurt an email...but I would bet that he reads this board...

How many of us SX club members have sold their MIM Fender Jazz's after buying a SX jazz?
I'm contemplating on selling mine and getting a SX Jag.

I think I might pull the trigger on an SX SPB-62 in Vintage White tomorrow. I've read all the praise on this forum and for the money how can you beat em? I'm not in a position to spend more than $300 on a bass right now, I played a MIM bass today expecting to be bummed out that I couldn't afford it, yet I like the Pete W P Bass way better!? That thing is ugly though with that stupid graphic on the body and 12th fret, and only has a volume knob, no tone. I was thinking of the Squier VM P bass (yet body is Agathis, does this matter?) or modding the hell out of the SX P bass. I gotta decide quick!

I'm ready to sell my Fender MIM jazz in favor of the SX jazz I have.

If I had both, and my sx jazz was close, I'd probably do it, but only if I could get enough to replace it with 1.5 or more other SX basses that are not just standard jazz basses.

My SX fretless jazz arrived today! Looks and feels solid. This is my first fretless, so I have a lot of learning to do still.
It may just be the honeymoon period, but I'm wondering why I haven't been playing fretless all along.

Well, I think there's a reason the P-bass is the industry standard. That's not to knock other basses, and I've owned and played a lot of them in my day. But for such a simple machine, the P-bass can cover a lot of territory. Hell, just tweaking the tone knob and adjusting where you are picking (near the bridge, over the pickup, closer to the neck) will do an awful lot for your tone palette.
That said, I'd be happy to own non-P and non-Fender style basses, and have many times in the past.
But to go back on topic, the SX DID arrive today, and I can't believe I got this baby for under $125. When I was starting out playing bass, cheapies were really cheap--cheaply made and nearly unplayable usually. This thing seems really well finished and sweet. Frets are in perfect order and don't really need anything...it intonates great and stays in tune...tuners and bridge seem a little cheap, but overall I'm really impressed. Like the neck too.
Now, I don't have an amp rig at the moment, but I've been playing it through this little headphone amp thing, and it sounds pretty freakin' good.
Am I gonna be one of those people that say "I played an MIA Custom Shop $3000 Fender P-bass, and my $110 SX blew it away!"
No.
But I've been playing a lot of basses lately while shopping around, and I think this has incredible bang for the buck.
Me very happy.
Pics this weekend.

I hear ya! IMO, the only way to beat the value of an SPB-62 is to get an SPJ-62 for only $10 more!
Edit: Then again, I got mine for $20 less than an SPB as a b-stock, so I guess there are OTHER ways to beat the value, but I'm just sayin'!

I'm really considering getting that SX Jaguar. What do people think of Jaguar guitars in general though?
