1. Carol Kaye: who DIDN'T she play with back in the day?!?! Besides, her tutorial stuff is superb.
2. Laura Love: she plays bass, she sings, she.......YODELS. Truly defines the word "eclectic". The light bulb went ON to pick up the bass after seeing her in concert in Kansas City 5 years ago.
3. Beto Moreno: www.madahoochi.com - this great player out of St. Louis inspired me to play the 5-string. Saw him and his AWESOME band not long after seeing Laura Love.
4. Tina Weymouth: IMHO, the "Ringo Starr" of bass players: nothin' fancy, just get locked in and stay locked in. No pyrotechnics, just "rock solid and pocket wise", as Lane Baldwin says.
5. Jaco Pastorius - because he played with Joni Mitchell (my diva of divas!) and because he inspires me, like Joni TO FIND MY OWN VOICE. I don't want to be the NEXT Jaco, I want to be the first........ME. That is NOT arrogance, either.
The other reason I like Jaco? HE NEVER SLAPPED. (BASS GUITAR magazine, January 2006). And I'm having a HARD time with getting slap down! LOL

Yes! Although I have a lot of guys that I follow and dig, Anthony is the pinnacle of what a bass player should be, IMO. His playing and unwavering dedication to the instrument should be a lesson to us at all on what a real musician is.

This guy. I realize that many don't seem to think he is as great as I do but the man has more energy and a better stage presence than anyone I've ever seen, makes slap sound DAMN good in metal and plays a warwick thumb. I realize that many people will never hear him because they hear the beginning of a Mudvayne song and just immediately change it. The man's a machine..
I do not idolize anyone.
I really really like this guy.

As to the OP question, I have to choose just one?
Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, Steve Harris and Gene Simmons were major influences in my desire to play bass. But there are so many fantatic bass players out there, how can you pick just one?
